August is Grief Awareness Month

Grief doesn’t always follow the path you expect. Sometimes, it begins long before a loss has occurred. It shows up in quiet moments—while you sit anxiously beside someone you love, knowing they are dying. This kind of grief is called anticipatory grief. It’s a form of mourning that often goes unacknowledged and unseen. It can feel confusing or even isolating, as you grieve someone who is still physically and mentally present. But the emotional weight of this experience is just as heavy as the grief that follows. And it is every bit as worthy of understanding, support, and care.

At Hospice Austin, grief support is more than a service—it’s a heartfelt commitment to walking alongside individuals and families through the deeply personal and often unpredictable emotional journey of loss. Grief doesn’t follow a set schedule or timeline, and we understand that. That’s why, in addition to our post-loss bereavement services, we offer specialized resources for those experiencing anticipatory grief.

Our Anticipatory Grief Support Group, created in collaboration with Kitchen Table Conversations, is specifically designed for those trying to process the pain of what’s to come. This group provides a space where you don’t have to hide your emotions—where your pain, confusion, sorrow, and even moments of relief are welcomed without judgment. It’s a place to connect with others who are also living life in a blur. A place where you can love someone so deeply while you face the reality of having to say goodbye.

Led by experienced, licensed grief counselors, the Anticipatory Grief Support Group is a place to ask hard questions, listen, share, and find peace when the future feels uncertain. The group meets virtually, making it accessible to anyone who needs it, no matter where you are. It is open to the entire community—not just those with a loved one receiving hospice care—because we believe no one should have to face grief alone.

August is Grief Awareness Month, a time to remember that grief comes in many forms and doesn’t always wait for you to say goodbye. But you don’t need to wait for a final goodbye to begin seeking help. If you or someone you love is navigating the emotional complexity of anticipatory grief, we are here for you—with open arms and resources ready when you need them most.
