I wanted to write and thank you all for the kindness, patience, and generosity you gave to my family while my mother, Jane Starnes, was in your care. It was such a difficult and surreal time for us, and I truly appreciated the efforts of everyone, especially the amazing nurses and nurses aides, to help us all through the process. Death may be inevitable, but it is also unwelcome. I was grateful that you were at least able to afford my mom some dignity and respect in the process. I know that she appreciated it, too.
Her granddaughter, Ruby Jane, was born a week after Mom died. I’ve enclosed a few photos of our family, because you all watched my belly grow and due date approach during the weeks that Mom was at Christopher House. We’re all grieving, but also trying to focus on this amazing new life that has arrived. It’s hard not to marvel at the circle of life.
Thank you again for everything. Christopher House is truly a special place.
Most of you met or cared for my wife Jane, who was in room 3 from February 27 to March 21.
I tried to give my thanks to those of you who were there when Jane died, but I don’t want to leave anyone out. Without exception, every one of you were
wonderful to her, Sarah, and me. I had heard many good things about Christopher House before we came, and it all turned out to be true. After she had such a difficult time in the hospital, and for the two years of cancer treatment before that, you made her last days more comfortable and pain-free and peaceful than I ever thought possible. I don’t know how you do it.
Just so you’ll know, Jane missed the arrival of the granddaughter
by exactly a week. Ruby Jane was born on March 28, and she and Sarah are fine. We’ll tell her all about her grandmother someday.
