Grieving a Loss?

All of us grieve in our own way, in our own time. Hospice Austin can help guide you through the complicated and sometimes overwhelming grieving process. You do not have to grieve alone.

We offer the most extensive bereavement program of any hospice in Central Texas, including individual counseling, a variety of support groups, programs for families and a free summer camp for children grieving the loss of someone they love. Services are open to anyone in our community who needs them.

We offer additional support for the loved ones of our patients, including personal companion visits, telephone counseling if the loved one is home-bound, trained volunteer support and memorial services held twice a year dedicated to the remembrance of our patients.

Camp Brave Heart

Hospice Austin’s Camp Brave Heart is a free, recreational overnight summer camp for children and adolescents ages 6 to 17 that have experienced the death of a loved one. Applications for the 2015 camp will become available on April 1st, 2014. The date of next year’s camp is to be announced, but it is generally held in early August.

Families in Grief

Grieving the death of a loved one is hard enough for adults—for children and teenagers, it can be particularly confusing as they try to process feelings of loss, anger, and guilt.  Hospice Austin is offering Families in Grief, a 6-week bereavement counseling program, to assist grieving families with children ages 4-18.  The program is open to anyone in the community. The next session will meet weekly on Thursdays from 6 – 7:30 pm and run from October 2nd to November 6th. The sessions will be held at Hospice Austin, 4107 Spicewood Springs Rd, in Austin.

The kids will be grouped with others near their age who have experienced similar losses; they will be encouraged to express their feelings through discussion, art, storytelling, and play. Their caregivers will meet separately to learn how to nurture themselves and their children through the grief process.

There is a $25 charge for Families in Grief; that fee is refunded to the family if all 6 sessions are attended. An intake session with a therapist is required. Enrollment is limited, and regular attendance by the entire family is requested. Dinner will be served each evening at no charge. Childcare for children under age four is also provided. For more information, please contact Hospice Austin’s Bereavement department at 512/342-4700 or 1/800/445-3261.

Hospice Austin Memorial Services

Hospice Austin hosts two non-religious memorial services a year for families and staff to remember and honor our patients who have died. Our next memorial service will be on Wednesday, October 8th at 7:00 pm at St. George’s Episcopal Church at 4301 N.  IH 35, Austin, 78722. Families are welcome to bring a photo of their loved ones if they wish.

Workplace/School Grief Programs

Dealing with the loss of a co-worker or classmate can bring unique challenges. Hospice Austin offers educational seminars on dealing with grief in the workplace or in the school setting.

Surviving the Holidays

The holidays can be a particularly difficult time for people who have lost someone they love. Those wondering how to get through the holidays or worrying that their sadness will spoil the celebrations for others are invited to join Hospice Austin and a panel of experts who will share tools for surviving the holidays. The nonreligious program is free and open to all in the Austin area who are grieving the death of a loved one. This year’s program will be on Thursday, November 20th at 7:00 pm at First Presbyterian Church (8001 Mesa Dr. 78731).
